NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenyan government has launched a major modernization project at Afraha Stadium as part of a broader national effort to upgrade sports infrastructure and position the country to host more regional and international events.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Raymond Omollo said the renovation is being spearheaded by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and will transform the stadium into a modern sporting facility capable of hosting international competitions.
The upgrade will be implemented in phases, gradually increasing the venue’s seating capacity to between 13,000 and 15,000 spectators during the intermediate stages, before eventually reaching a long-term target of about 20,000 seats.
Structural Upgrades Underway
Omollo said the ongoing phase focuses primarily on reinforcing the stadium’s structural foundation to support future expansion and improved safety standards.
Construction teams are currently installing reinforced concrete pillars, undertaking column casting and beam works, and developing terracing structures designed to accommodate larger crowds while improving spectator movement throughout the facility.
“These foundational works are critical in ensuring the stadium can support expanded seating and modern sporting infrastructure,” Omollo noted.
Modern Sports Facilities Planned
Beyond structural reinforcement, the modernization project includes several upgrades aimed at bringing the stadium in line with international sporting standards.
Among the key improvements is the installation of a modern all-weather Tartan running track and the redesign of the football pitch to meet competitive match requirements.
The project will also see the installation of high-mast floodlights to enable evening sporting events, an upgrade expected to increase the stadium’s capacity to host televised matches and major tournaments.
In addition, new VIP pavilions are planned to enhance comfort and viewing experience for guests, while also improving the stadium’s ability to host high-profile sporting events.

Coordination and Security
According to Omollo, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is playing a key role in coordinating the renovation process and ensuring a secure environment for contractors and workers involved in the project.
“Throughout the renovation period, the State Department continues to play a critical coordinating role, supporting site security, ensuring seamless inter-agency collaboration, and facilitating an enabling environment that allows the project to progress efficiently and safely,” he said.
Boost to Nakuru’s Sports Economy
Once completed, the upgraded stadium is expected to strengthen Nakuru’s position as a regional sports hub and provide a platform for nurturing local athletic talent.
Authorities say the facility will also boost sports tourism by attracting national and international competitions, potentially increasing visitor numbers and stimulating local economic activity.
The renovation aligns with the government’s broader plan to modernize key sports facilities across the country, a move aimed at expanding opportunities for athletes while enhancing Kenya’s profile in global sporting events.
