Arsenal Extend Premier League Lead as Man City Stumble in Title Race

Trending

LONDON, United Kingdom — Arsenal strengthened their grip on the Premier League title race on Wednesday after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, while closest challengers Manchester City dropped crucial points in a 2–2 draw against Nottingham Forest.

The win pushed Arsenal seven points clear at the top of the Premier League, increasing pressure on City, who still have a game in hand.

Saka Marks Milestone with Winner

Bukayo Saka celebrated his 300th appearance for Arsenal in style, scoring the decisive goal in the ninth minute at the Amex Stadium.

The England international cut inside from the right and fired a shot from the edge of the box that deflected off Carlos Baleba before slipping through the legs of Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

Despite dominating possession and registering more attempts on goal, Brighton were unable to break down Arsenal’s defence as the visitors held firm to secure a nervy victory.

“This was a really difficult one after everything we’ve been through in the last few weeks,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told TNT Sports.

“Every game in the Premier League offers you different things. Big credit to the boys because the effort they put in is astronomical.”

The result keeps Arsenal on course for their first English league title since the 2003–04 season, when the club famously completed an unbeaten campaign.

City Slip Up Against Forest

Second-placed Manchester City missed the chance to keep the pressure on the league leaders after twice surrendering the lead against Nottingham Forest.

January signing Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring for City with a volley in the first half.

Forest responded through Morgan Gibbs-White, who produced a moment of improvisation by backheeling the ball into the net in the 56th minute.

City regained the advantage six minutes later when Rodri headed home from a corner delivered by Rayan Aït-Nouri.

However, Forest refused to back down, and midfielder Elliot Anderson levelled with a well-taken finish that secured a valuable point for the side managed by Vítor Pereira.

“There are still many games to play,” said City manager Pep Guardiola. “If we analyse it, in general it was a good performance, and there were many good things, but of course we have things we can improve.”

The draw helped Forest remain outside the relegation zone, level on points with West Ham United but ahead on goal difference.

Newcastle Down United

Elsewhere, Newcastle United defeated Manchester United 2–1 at St James’ Park, handing interim manager Michael Carrick his first defeat across two caretaker spells.

Newcastle took the lead through Anthony Gordon from the penalty spot after Jacob Ramsey was sent off for a second yellow card.

Casemiro equalised for United before the break, but substitute William Osula scored a late winner in the 90th minute.

“I’m bitterly disappointed,” Carrick said after the defeat. “It wasn’t about the red card — we just didn’t play well enough.”

Chelsea Boost Champions League Hopes

In the race for Champions League qualification, Chelsea FC climbed to fifth after a 4–1 comeback win over Aston Villa.

João Pedro scored a hat-trick as Chelsea moved within three points of fourth-placed Villa, tightening the battle for a top-four finish.

Meanwhile, West Ham secured a 1–0 victory over Fulham FC thanks to a goal from Crysencio Summerville.

With several months of the season still remaining, Arsenal holds the advantage in the title race, but City’s game in hand means the battle for the Premier League crown is far from settled.
