Kenyan middle-distance star Faith Kipyegon earned a nomination for the 2026 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award, cementing her status among the world’s elite athletes.
Laureus announced the shortlist this week, highlighting Kipyegon’s exceptional 2025 season.
“This nomination motivates me to keep pushing limits,” Kipyegon said. “I run for Kenya, and I hope my performances inspire the next generation.”
This marks her third consecutive Laureus nomination, a testament to her consistency on the global stage.
The award ceremony will take place at the Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid on April 20, 2026.
Kipyegon dominated international athletics in 2025. She claimed her fourth World Championship gold in the 1500 m, becoming the only woman to maintain such a streak in recent history.
She also broke the 1500 m world record at the Eugene Diamond League, clocking 3:48.68, the fastest time globally that year.
In addition, she won silver in the 5000 m at the World Championships, demonstrating her range across distances.
Her speed, endurance, and tactical brilliance earned her the nomination over athletes from other disciplines.
“Faith’s performances make her a global role model,” a Laureus spokesperson said. “She embodies excellence, resilience, and dedication.”
Kipyegon joins a competitive field in the Sportswoman category, including:
- Aitana Bonmatí — Spanish football star
- Melissa Jefferson‑Wooden — American sprint champion
- Sydney McLaughlin‑Levrone — 400 m hurdler
- Katie Ledecky — U.S. swimming champion
- Aryna Sabalenka — top-ranked tennis player
Despite the stiff competition, Kipyegon’s dominance in middle-distance running gives her a strong edge.
Kipyegon’s nomination highlights Kenya’s enduring legacy in athletics. She leads the Kenyan nominees list and represents a new era of women athletes excelling on the world stage.
If she wins, she will join the select few Kenyan athletes to claim the Laureus award, following legends like Vivian Cheruiyot.
The Laureus World Sports Awards celebrate global sports excellence, and a panel of over 1,300 media professionals selects nominees. Academy members vote to determine winners, making the recognition highly prestigious.
Kipyegon focuses on training and preparation ahead of the awards, while also planning her 2026 competitive season.
“I dedicate my runs to my country and every young athlete chasing a dream,” Kipyegon added. “The Laureus nomination is a bonus, but my focus remains on the track.”
