NAIROBI, Kenya – The Harambee Stars have withdrawn from the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament in Tanzania, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has confirmed.
In a statement released on Monday, FKF cited “unsuitable conditions” for the team’s participation and preparation as the reason behind the decision.
The withdrawal follows a comprehensive assessment by the technical bench led by head coach Benni McCarthy.
“This decision has been made following recommendations and advice from the team’s technical bench… after a thorough assessment of the prevailing conditions,” the federation said in the statement.
The specific nature of the concerns was not disclosed, but FKF reiterated its commitment to ensuring the national team operates in the best environment possible.
The Harambee Stars are now expected to return to Kenya immediately to begin focused preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 qualifiers.
“The team will return to Kenya and resume preparations for CHAN 2024, with full focus now shifting to ensuring optimal readiness for the assignment ahead,” the statement added.
This marks a setback in the team’s regional engagement plans, though FKF insists it is in the best interest of the players and the long-term goals of the national side.
