Kenyan match officials are making their mark at the ongoing CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025, earning high-profile appointments for two crucial Group B fixtures on Friday, December 26.

Dr. Peter Waweru Kamaku will take charge as centre referee for the Angola vs Zimbabwe clash at 12:30 GMT (15:30 EAT) at Marrakech Stadium.

He will be assisted by fellow Kenyans Gilbert Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Stephen Eleazar Onyango Yiembe as Assistant Referees 1 and 2, respectively.

This will be Kamaku and Yiembe’s second outing in Angola’s matches at AFCON 2025, having previously officiated Angola’s opening fixture against South Africa—a sign of CAF’s trust in their consistency and performance under pressure.

The full officiating team for the match also includes Moroccan officials Mustapha Kechchaf (fourth official) and Hamza El Fariq (VAR), Sudan’s Abdalaziz Yasir Ahmed Abdalaziz (Assistant VAR), and Moroccan referee assessor Yahya Hadqa.

Later in the day, Kenyan official Engineer Dickens Mimisa will serve as Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the Group B heavyweight clash between Egypt and South Africa at 6:00 pm GMT (21:00 EAT) in Agadir.

Mimisa has already been involved in Egyptian matches at this AFCON, handling VAR duties in Egypt’s 2–1 win over Zimbabwe and serving as Assistant VAR in the Burkina Faso vs Equatorial Guinea game.

Friday’s fixtures carry high stakes, with Angola and Zimbabwe seeking their first wins after narrow opening defeats, while Egypt and South Africa battle for momentum and positioning in the group.

CAF’s continued appointments of Kenyan officials to pressure-filled matches highlight their growing reputation on the continental stage.

As AFCON 2025 unfolds, Kenya’s referees are increasingly seen as reliable arbiters in Africa’s premier football competition—a testament to their rising pedigree and professionalism.
