When Madina Okot steps onto the court, few players can match her presence. At 6-foot-6, the Kenyan center is not just tall — she’s a force.
Known for her rebounding dominance, efficient scoring inside the paint, and shot-blocking prowess, Okot has quickly become a cornerstone of the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team in the 2025-26 NCAA season.
Born and raised in Mumias, Kenya, Okot’s journey to the NCAA was far from ordinary. She initially focused on volleyball during her school years, only discovering basketball in her late teens.
Her remarkable height and athleticism, however, made her a natural inside the paint, catching the attention of scouts and coaches abroad.
Before moving to the U.S., Okot dominated regional leagues in Kenya and represented her country in international competitions, including FIBA 3×3 and traditional 5-on-5 tournaments.
Her performances drew interest from top college programs in the United States, and she eventually earned a scholarship to Mississippi State University.
At Mississippi State, Okot’s impact was immediate. She started every game during her freshman season, averaging near double-doubles with points and rebounds, and became known for her composure and ability to protect the rim.
Her swift adjustment to the American college basketball system highlighted her adaptability and work ethic, setting the stage for her next move.

After a standout season at Mississippi State, Okot entered the NCAA transfer portal, drawing attention from several high-profile programs. The South Carolina Gamecocks, led by Hall of Fame coach Dawn Staley, secured her commitment.
The move to South Carolina has given Okot a larger platform in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), one of the most competitive conferences in women’s college basketball.
She has embraced her role as a key contributor, consistently putting up nearly 14 points and 10 rebounds per game, regularly posting double-doubles, and anchoring the Gamecocks’ defense.
In the NCAA she was recently placed on the Lisa Leslie Center of the Year Watch List, recognizing the nation’s top collegiate centers.
Additionally, she has received SEC Player of the Week honors, acknowledging standout performances that often swing the momentum in critical matchups.
One memorable performance came in late 2025 when Okot recorded a 23-point, 13-rebound game against Louisville, helping secure a narrow victory for the Gamecocks.
