While much of football’s spotlight shines on players and coaches, a new generation of professionals is redefining the game from behind the scenes.
Among them is Naythan Din-Kariuki, a Kenyan talent analyst whose work is helping shape recruitment decisions at the highest level of European football.
Currently serving as Lead Data Scout at Aston Villa, Kariuki represents a growing shift in modern football, where data, analytics, and strategy are becoming just as important as what happens on the pitch.
Kariuki’s journey into elite football is anything but conventional.
He began his career in Kenya in 2016 as a goalkeeper coach at Kariobangi Sharks, a role that grounded him in the practical side of the sport.
But even then, his interest extended beyond training sessions. He was drawn to the analytical side of football, studying performance, patterns, and player development.
This curiosity would ultimately shape his career.
Determined to build expertise, Kariuki pursued advanced education abroad, earning postgraduate degrees focused on sports business and performance analysis. His academic path laid the foundation for a career that blends technical knowledge with real-world application.
After his early years in Kenya, Kariuki transitioned into roles that allowed him to merge analytics with scouting.
He worked with organizations such as Eden Sports Group and later joined Oxford United, where he gained experience in recruitment analysis.
In 2023, he moved to Danish club AC Horsens as a senior scout, further strengthening his credentials in European football. Just a year later, he joined Aston Villa, one of the most competitive environments in world football.
By 2025, he had risen to the position of Lead Data Scout, a role that places him at the heart of the club’s recruitment strategy.
Kariuki’s work may not be visible on match day, but its impact is significant.
As a data scout, he:
- Analyzes player performance using advanced metrics
- Identifies potential signings based on data and scouting reports
- Combines video analysis with statistical models
- Supports decision-making in player recruitment
In modern football, where transfer decisions can involve millions of dollars, this role is critical. Clubs rely on professionals like Kariuki to reduce risk, uncover hidden talent, and gain a competitive edge.
Kariuki’s growing influence has not gone unnoticed.
In 2025, he was named to the The Football Black List. A prestigious recognition that celebrates influential Black professionals in the sport. The list is an honor highlighting individuals who are making meaningful contributions across football.
He has also been selected for the UEFA Elite Scout Programme, an initiative designed to develop top scouting talent globally. These recognitions place him among a select group of professionals shaping the future of football.
Back home, he was listed among Business Daily’s Top 40 Under 40, further cementing his reputation as one of Kenya’s rising figures in global sports.
Beyond his role in Europe, Kariuki has remained connected to the region.
He co-founded EA Eye, a platform focused on identifying and promoting football talent from East Africa.
The initiative aims to bridge the gap between local players and international opportunities using data and scouting networks to spotlight emerging stars.
Despite his achievements, Kariuki remains largely out of the public spotlight.
