Trinity Rodman has made history after signing a record-breaking contract that makes her the highest-paid women’s soccer player in the world, marking a major milestone for women’s football globally.
The 23-year-old United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) star agreed to a new long-term deal with Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), reportedly worth over $2 million per year, including bonuses.
The contract runs through 2028 and sets a new global benchmark for player salaries in the women’s game.
Rodman’s new contract surpasses previous salary records held by top players in Europe and the United States, placing her at the top of women’s football earnings worldwide.
“This is a monumental moment,” Rodman said following the announcement. “Not just for me, but for the league and for the next generation of players who deserve to be valued for their work.”

Washington Spirit described the deal as a statement of intent, signalling their commitment to retaining world-class talent amid rising competition from European leagues such as the English Women’s Super League (WSL) and Spain’s Liga F.
The road to Rodman’s historic contract was not without controversy. The NWSL reportedly blocked the initial versions of the deal over concerns about salary cap compliance.
Teams were allowed to spend a maximum of $3.5 million on players. At the time, league officials argued that the proposed contract conflicted with existing financial regulations.
The decision sparked criticism from fans and the NWSL Players Association, who accused the league of limiting player earnings and failing to keep pace with the sport’s growth.
In response, the NWSL introduced a new salary mechanism referred to as the ‘High Impact Player’ rule, allowing clubs to exceed standard salary cap limits for designated star players.
While the rule made Rodman’s deal possible, it also raised questions about transparency, fairness, and whether similar opportunities will be extended to other players.
Rodman has been one of the fastest-rising stars in women’s football since turning professional in 2021.
Drafted second overall by the Washington Spirit at just 18 years old, she quickly made her mark and was named NWSL Rookie of the Year in her debut season.
Known for her speed, physicality, and attacking versatility, Rodman has consistently delivered standout performances for club and country.
She has been instrumental in the Washington Spirit’s success and has established herself as a key figure in the U.S. national team setup.
At the international level, Rodman has represented the United States at major tournaments, including the Olympic Games, where she played a crucial role in the team’s campaign.
Her performances have positioned her as one of the faces of the next generation of U.S. women’s soccer stars.
Beyond her footballing ability, Rodman’s growing commercial appeal has played a key role in her record earnings.
She has secured major endorsement deals and commands strong visibility on social media, making her one of the most marketable athletes in women’s sports.
Rodman’s deal is being viewed as a turning point for the NWSL, which has long positioned itself as the top women’s league globally.
Retaining elite players has become increasingly important as European clubs continue to grow financially and competitively.

While pay disparities with the men’s game remain significant, deals like Rodman’s show tangible progress in how elite female players are valued.
For many within the sport, Rodman’s contract is seen not just as an individual achievement, but as a symbol of broader change.
“I hope this opens doors,” Rodman said. “Not only for stars, but for everyone coming through the system.”
