NAIROBI, Kenya- A highly anticipated Kenya Premier League fixture between Gor Mahia FC and newly promoted Nairobi United FC at Dandora Stadium was marred by violence, injuries and property damage as tensions among fans boiled over in what should have been a celebration of football.

At least on fan was confirmed dead after the chaos.

The match, which pitted one of Kenya’s most successful clubs against an emerging force in the league, descended into chaos before and during play, with reports confirming a number of injuries and destruction of stadium facilities.

Supporters and officials at the venue witnessed scenes of disorder that raised fresh concerns over crowd management and fan safety at domestic football matches.

Eyewitnesses described a volatile atmosphere shortly before kick‑off, with confrontations breaking out among rival supporters.

Security personnel were seen struggling to contain the disturbances, which included throwing of objects and clashes that spilled into spectator areas.

Several fans reportedly sustained injuries requiring medical attention, with some taken to nearby facilities for treatment.

The match was ultimately abandoned amid the unrest, as stewards and police prioritized restoring order over continuing play.

Frustration among sections of the crowd — attributed in part to dissatisfaction with officiating and fan behaviour — escalated into physical altercations that caused damage to seating areas and stadium property.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) officials have condemned the events and launched an investigation into the incidents at Dandora Stadium.

The federation reiterated that fan and player safety remains paramount and vowed that those found culpable would face disciplinary action once inquiries conclude.

These scenes follow a pattern of crowd management challenges in Kenyan football, with previous clashes and injuries reported at high‑profile matches involving Gor Mahia and other clubs.

FKF has, in recent statements, committed to enhancing match‑day security and fan education to prevent similar occurrences in future fixtures.

As the league progresses, stakeholders face mounting pressure to address systemic issues around stadium safety, ticketing, and crowd control to ensure that football returns to being a unifying sport rather than one associated with risk and disorder.
