NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has appointed Dr. Bernard William Chitunga as the Chancellor of the Co-operative University of Kenya.
The appointment, effective from January 10, 2025, is set to last for five years, according to a Gazette notice dated January 17, 2025.
Dr. Chitunga, born 36 years ago in Western Kenya, brings a wealth of experience in global development finance.
His career spans 15 years across Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Asia, showcasing a robust background in international financial institutions.
Currently, Dr. Chitunga serves as a Partnership Specialist at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Beijing, China.
Before this role, he was with the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), where he worked as a Senior Officer in Partnerships, Donors, and Special Projects.
Dr. Chitunga’s academic credentials are equally impressive.
He holds a PhD in Sustainable Development, a Master’s in Global Business from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Italy, and an MBA from UGSM Monarch Business School in Switzerland.
His appointment is a move by President Ruto to infuse the Co-operative University of Kenya with global financial expertise, aiming to align the institution with international development standards.
Dr. Chitunga’s leadership is anticipated to enhance the university’s academic and operational frameworks, fostering growth and sustainability.
This appointment is part of Ruto’s broader vision to leverage experienced professionals in key educational roles, contributing to the development of higher education in Kenya.
