JERUSALEM, Israel – Israeli officials and Western media outlets reported late Saturday that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been killed in a joint United States-Israeli military strike on Tehran.
Iranian authorities, however, have not confirmed his death, and strong denials continue from Tehran.
According to a senior Israeli official quoted by Reuters, Khamenei’s body has been found in the rubble of his heavily damaged compound after a series of aerial strikes targeting Iran’s top leadership.
The official described the operation as a decisive blow to Iran’s command structure, but independent verification of the reports remains pending.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there were “many signs that this tyrant is no longer alive” after the compound was destroyed in what was described as part of a broader offensive against Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure.
He claimed that senior Revolutionary Guard commanders and other high-ranking figures were killed alongside Khamenei.
Iran’s Response: Denials and Accusations of Psychological Warfare
Iranian state media and officials have dismissed the reports as “mental warfare” and propaganda aimed at destabilizing the country.
A representative from Khamenei’s office said that the supreme leader and most senior officials remain “firmly commanding the field,” adding that Tehran would not be swayed by unverified foreign claims.
There has also been no official confirmation from the U.S. government regarding Khamenei’s fate.
While U.S. and Israeli strikes have undeniably struck key military sites around Tehran and across Iran, the status of Iran’s highest authority, who has held power since 1989, remains officially unverified.
Wider Regional Escalation
The strikes drew swift retaliation from Iran, which launched missile and drone attacks toward Israeli and U.S. assets across the Middle East.
Explosions and missile warnings were reported in multiple Gulf countries that host American bases, heightening fears of a broader regional conflict.
Analysts warn that if Khamenei’s death is confirmed, it would mark a historic turning point in Middle East geopolitics.
Iran’s leadership succession could trigger internal power struggles within the Islamic Republic’s clerical and military elite, while also reshaping diplomatic and military balances across the region.
What’s Next
International observers and governments are awaiting clearer evidence, with some calling for independent verification.
The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as more details emerge from both Tehran and international monitoring sources.
