ZONTECOMATLAN, Veracruz — A tragic bus accident in eastern Mexico claimed at least 10 lives and left 32 others injured on Christmas Eve, authorities said Thursday.
The crash occurred as the vehicle traveled from Mexico City to the village of Chicontepec in the town of Zontecomatlan.
The mayor’s office confirmed that nine adults and one child died in the accident.
Officials also released the names of the injured and the hospitals where they were being treated, though details on their conditions have not yet been made public.
Fatal road accidents are a persistent problem in Mexico, often involving buses or trucks and commonly caused by speeding or mechanical failures.
A similar incident in late November in the western state of Michoacan left 10 dead and 20 injured.
Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash, while emergency services continue to assist victims and their families.
