Azimio Affiliate Parties Reject New Leadership Changes, Warn of Legal Action

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — A section of affiliate parties within the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition has rejected recent leadership changes announced by the outfit, declaring the process “illegal, null and void” and accusing coalition leadership of sidelining key partners.

Led by National Liberal Party (NLP) Secretary General Ishmael Omondi Koyoo, the dissenting affiliates say the changes were pushed through without consultation and in violation of the coalition’s founding principles of inclusivity, transparency and accountability.

In a formal letter to the Registrar of Political Parties, the group warned the office against effecting the changes, cautioning that they will pursue legal action should the resolutions be processed.

“The actions undertaken go against the founding principles that Azimio espouses,” the affiliates said in a joint statement. “We reject in totality the resolutions submitted to your office and caution you from further processing the illegal, null and void resolutions. Failure to which we shall seek legal redress in a competent court of law.”

The affiliates further accused unnamed coalition partners of political deceit, alleging that a purported Azimio meeting was convened “clandestinely and non-procedurally” to deliberate on coalition affairs, fill vacant positions and remove officials from both the National Executive Committee and the Council.

“It is worth noting that political party coalitions are living agreements and not mere tombstones,” the statement read, underscoring their claim that decisions affecting the coalition must be consultative and grounded in existing agreements.

The group has also formally demanded key documents from the Registrar of Political Parties to shed light on the disputed process.

These include the Azimio Coalition Political Party Deed of Agreement, the official status of coalition membership as of February 1, 2026, notice and minutes of the alleged February 2, 2026 meeting, statutory Form PP7 on the change of officials, and the attendance register of the meeting.

They further questioned the speed with which the changes were handled, noting that the meeting was reportedly held on February 2, 2026, with resolutions filed and acknowledged by the Registrar on the same day.

“We call for similar urgency and efficiency in addressing the concerns we have raised,” the affiliates said.

The protest comes a day after the Azimio council formally communicated the leadership changes to the Registrar of Political Parties as the coalition gears up for the 2027 General Election.

Under the disputed reshuffle, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was named the new Azimio coalition leader, Suba North MP Caroli Omondi appointed Secretary General, and veteran politician Philip Kisia named Executive Director.

The changes also saw the removal of Junet Mohamed as Secretary General and Raphael Tuju as Executive Director, further fuelling internal dissent within the opposition coalition.
