MBEERE NORTH, Kenya – ACK Mbeere Diocese Bishop Moses Mashamba on Monday led a cleansing and prayer ritual at St. Stephen’s Karangare Church, a day after a young man attempted to attack Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua with a knife during a Sunday service.
The bishop, joined by senior clergy members, prayed inside the sanctuary and sprinkled holy water around the church compound to restore calm and reassure worshippers.
“We have come to restore peace and assure our faithful that the house of God remains a place of refuge, not fear,” Bishop Mashamba said.
The attack occurred during a church service when a middle-aged man charged at DP Gachagua with a knife. He was restrained by congregants before he could cause harm.
Earlier on Monday, tension flared when some residents attempted to storm the church in protest over the incident.
Bishop Mashamba used the opportunity to call for peace and unity, especially as the Mbeere North by-elections approach.
“As we head into the by-elections, I urge our people to embrace unity and reject any actions that sow discord among neighbors,” he said.
The church cleansing aimed to assure congregants that faith spaces remain safe and to prevent fear from overshadowing worship.
