NAIROBI, Kenya – Police have launched investigations into a violent disruption of a church service attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Mwiki, Kasarani Sub-county, on Sunday.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the incident involved a group of over 100 motorcycles, each carrying multiple pillion passengers, who followed closely behind Gachagua’s convoy and stormed the event.
The intruders allegedly demanded money from the politicians in attendance and caused chaos within the church compound, damaging vehicles and other property.
Gunshots were heard at the scene, prompting officers from Mwiki Police Station to respond.
The DCI said the shots were fired by VIP security officers and licensed civilian firearm holders attempting to protect the leaders from the aggressive crowd.
Police managed to repulse the group, detaining several individuals and impounding ten motorcycles abandoned at the scene.
The DCI noted that the church had not informed police in advance about the event involving high-profile leaders, and therefore no prior security arrangements had been made.
