NAIROBI, Kenya – The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has ordered investigations into the death of gospel singer Betty Bayo, also known as Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua.
In a letter addressed to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday, the DPP instructed that a full probe into Bayo’s death be conducted, with findings submitted to the office of the prosecutors within seven days.
The move follows a petition from the late singer’s mother, Joyce Wairimu, who on December 9 urged the DPP to initiate an inquest into her daughter’s death.
Bayo, popularly known for her hit song 11th Hour, passed away on November 10, 2025, at Kenyatta National Hospital, where she was reportedly receiving treatment.
While a family spokesperson, alongside Bayo’s husband Hiram Gitau, stated that she had died from leukaemia, her mother has raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding her death.
In her letter to the DPP, Wairimu alleged that Bayo had not shown any signs of illness prior to her death and described it as “mysterious.”
She also claimed the family was denied access to the autopsy report and medical records, and that Bayo was hastily buried in what she believes may have been an attempt to conceal the truth behind her passing.
The DPP’s directive signals the start of a formal investigation into the matter, as authorities seek to establish the cause of death and address the family’s concerns.
