Duale Launches Construction of 4,000-Bed Multi-Specialty Hospital at MTRH

Date:

ELDORET, Kenya — Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has launched the construction of a new 4,000-bed Multi-Specialty Teaching and Referral Hospital at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Kiplombe, Uasin Gishu County — a massive government investment set to reshape Kenya’s healthcare landscape and strengthen the push toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Duale presided over the groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, marking the start of Phase I, which will deliver 2,000 beds, including 60 ICU and 120 HDU beds.

The project — fully funded by the Government of Kenya — is scheduled for completion in April 2027 and is being implemented through a joint initiative between the Ministries of Health and Defence.

Spanning 200 acres, the new facility is designed to ease pressure on the current MTRH, expand specialised care, and cement Eldoret’s position as a premier medical, training, and research hub in East Africa. Officials say the project aligns with ongoing national reforms aimed at expanding access to quality, affordable healthcare in line with UHC priorities.

Duale said the hospital represents the future of Kenya’s health system — one built on digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and integrated innovation. The facility will feature interoperable electronic medical records, a unified patient ID system, telemedicine capability, and real-time electronic logistics for medical commodities, all consistent with the Digital Health Transformation Agenda (2023–2030).

Valued at Sh 50 billion, the project is also expected to generate over 10,000 jobs, boosting regional economic activity and reinforcing President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

The Cabinet Secretary praised the collaboration behind the project, acknowledging the National Treasury, Uasin Gishu County Government, development partners, academia, clinicians, and community representatives.

He said the partnership demonstrates that building a resilient, equitable health system is a shared national responsibility.

The ceremony was hosted by Uasin Gishu Governor Dr Jonathan Bii and MTRH CEO Dr Philip Kirwa, and attended by senior national and county officials, including Principal Secretaries Dr Ouma Oluga (Medical Services) and Dr Patrick Mariru (Defence), Senate Health Committee Chair Jackson Mandago, and Governors Wisley Rotich (Elgeyo Marakwet) and Stephen Sang (Nandi).

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Gladys Boss Shollei and presidential advisor Veska Kangogo were also present.
