Police Shoot Teen During Morning Prayer in Embakasi, Sparks Protests

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Police have shot and killed a 19‑year‑old man in Embakasi, Nairobi, Sunday morning, sparking protests and outrage.

The victim, identified as Shukri Adan, was shot at around 5:30am as he was on his way to morning prayers, according to eyewitnesses who spoke to local rights activists.

The incident reportedly began after a road accident involving a matatu and the car in which Shukri and two others were travelling.

A misunderstanding followed the collision, prompting police to intervene.

Eyewitnesses say officers forced Shukri and the other passengers to lie on the ground, and as tensions escalated, police opened fire, killing Shukri at the scene.

The exact circumstances leading to shots being fired remain unclear, and authorities have not yet issued an official statement.

Human rights activist Hussein Khalid has said groups including VOCALAfrica_ and Mukuru Community Justice Centre (@mukuru_cjc) are following up the matter.

The killing comes at a moment in Nairobi, where public anger over police violence and alleged unlawful use of force has been simmering for months.

Past demonstrations over issues such as police brutality and accountability have seen deadly clashes between security forces and protesters, with rights groups documenting multiple killings and injuries linked to police action in previous protests.
