MOMBASA, Kenya- Kenya Railways is facing questions after it abruptly cancelled the 10pm Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train from Mombasa to Nairobi, citing “technical issues.”
The night train was expected to transport hundreds of young people who had attended the Summer Tide Festival in Diani, Kwale County, many of whom were returning to Nairobi ahead of the anticipated Saba Saba demonstrations on Monday.
Earlier in the day, police blocked a group of youth at the Dongo Kundu bypass, preventing them from reaching the Mombasa Terminus for the 2pm SGR train to Nairobi. Authorities did not provide an official reason for the blockade.
Videos circulating on social media showed the youth chanting political slogans, including calls for the removal of President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.
Rights groups have condemned the move, terming it a violation of Article 39 of the Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of movement.
Following the afternoon disruption, the cancellation of the night train has triggered further concern over potential interference with transport services.
Kenya Railways did not issue details regarding the nature of the technical problem, nor indicate when normal service would resume.
The timing of the cancellation has drawn public interest, coming hours before the Saba Saba March for Our Lives, an annual day of protest that has seen renewed energy from youth across the country.
