NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has condemned the recent disruption of a church service he attended, labeling the incident as “unfortunate” and indicative of attempts to curtail his freedom of movement and association.
Unrest at PCEA Mwiki Church
The turmoil unfolded on Sunday at PCEA Mwiki Church in Kasarani Constituency, shortly after Gachagua’s arrival.
A group of unidentified individuals attempted to storm the church, causing a temporary breach in the security of the congregants.

Gachagua’s security detail promptly intervened, taking defensive positions to prevent the intruders from gaining access.
Amid the commotion, gunshots were reportedly heard, and the church’s bishop urged the congregation to remain calm.
Order was eventually restored, allowing the service to proceed without further incident.

Gachagua’s Response and Allegations
In the aftermath of the chaos, Gachagua expressed his dismay and questioned the motives behind the attack.
“I don’t understand why goons were sent to attack us during a church service,” he remarked.
He suggested that the incident was part of a broader effort to restrict his movements and interactions with like-minded individuals.
“We have seen a concerted effort to curtail our freedom to move around the country and to associate with those who are like-minded. It is unfortunate.”
Gachagua hinted at addressing these concerns more comprehensively during a scheduled national television interview on April 7.
“I don’t want to speak much right now because I have an interview tomorrow, and I have things to say,” he stated.
The interview is expected to shed light on his perspectives regarding recent political developments and the challenges he has faced since his impeachment in October 2024.
