Government Extends Security Alert in Parts of Marsabit for 30 Days

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The government has extended a security alert in several parts of Marsabit County for a further 30 days, citing persistent threats to safety and stability in the area.

In a notice published in the Kenya Gazette on Friday, December 19, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the decision was reached after consultations with the National Security Council.

The extension takes effect from December 23, 2025, at 6:30 pm and will remain in force for 30 days, with the option of being lifted or prolonged depending on the prevailing security situation.

“This notice shall take effect on December 23, 2025, as from 6:30 pm, for a period of thirty (30) days and may, at any time, be withdrawn or continued in force for such further period as the Cabinet Secretary may, in each case, by notice in the Kenya Gazette direct,” the notice reads.

The security alert covers 13 locations within the broader Hillo area in Dabel Location, Golbo Division.

The affected areas are Hillo Gorgora, Hillo Orofa, Hillo Walkite, Hillo Tanzania, Hillo Irress Abamartille, Hillo Gootu, Hillo Tessum Qalicha, Hillo Karray, Hillo Hudda, Hillo Qoranjido, Hillo Irress Shindia, Hillo Rabaalee and Hillo Godde Haroressa.

The initial declaration was issued on November 21, 2025, under Section 106(6) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, following heightened insecurity in the northern county.

Authorities say the extension reflects ongoing concerns over the safety of residents and protection of property, even as security operations continue in the region.

The Interior Ministry has urged residents and visitors in the affected areas to cooperate with security agencies during the period, as officers intensify patrols and enforcement measures.
