Guterres Condemns US–Israel–Iran Escalation, Urges Immediate Ceasefire

NEW YORK, United States — United Nations Secretary General António Guterres has strongly condemned the latest military escalation in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, warning that the exchange of fire threatens international peace and regional stability.

In a statement released Saturday, the United Nations chief criticised the use of force by the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as Iran’s subsequent retaliation across the region.

“I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East. The use of force by the United States & Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermine international peace & security,” Guterres said.

Upholding the UN Charter

The Secretary-General reminded all member states of their binding obligations under international law, particularly the provisions of the United Nations Charter.

“All Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the UN. The Charter clearly prohibits ‘the threat of the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations,’” he stated.

The UN Charter forms the cornerstone of global peace and security architecture, prohibiting unilateral aggression and mandating peaceful resolution of disputes.

Guterres’s remarks underscore concerns that continued hostilities could erode established international norms.

Call for Immediate De-escalation

Guterres called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urged all parties to step back from further confrontation.

“I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities & de-escalation. Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians & regional stability. I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table,” he said.

Diplomatic observers note that a broader regional conflict could destabilise key trade routes, disrupt energy markets, and exacerbate humanitarian crises across the Middle East.

Peaceful Settlement as Only Option

Reiterating the UN’s longstanding position, Guterres emphasised that military solutions cannot replace diplomacy.

“I reiterate that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. The Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security,” he said.
