NAIROBI, Kenya- The Kenya Editors Guild has strongly condemned the violent machete attack on Nation Media Group photojournalist Evans Habil Kweyu, who was assaulted by a gang of criminals as he was heading home from work in Nairobi.
According to local media reports, Kweyu was targeted just hours after covering a story on boda boda assault victims, a detail that has raised serious concern among press freedom advocates about the safety of journalists working in volatile environments.
In a press statement, the Guild expressed solidarity with Kweyu and all victims of similar attacks, emphasizing that Kenyans deserve to move, work, and live without fear.
“Kenyans deserve to move, work and live without fear,” KEG President Zubeidah Kananu said in a statement.

The organisation called for swift investigations and decisive action to address the escalating violence and ensure justice for media workers.
Journalists in Kenya have increasingly faced threats, attacks and intimidation while on duty, a trend that media bodies say undermines press freedom and hampers the vital role of the press in informing the public.
Security agencies have been urged to step up investigations, apprehend the perpetrators and provide effective protection for journalists covering critical stories across the country.
