NAIROBI, Kenya- The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has detailed how a combination of forensic analysis, CCTV footage and witness statements guided investigators to conclude that the death of veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo was the result of a road traffic accident, not foul play.
In a statement issued by DCI Director Mohamed Amin and signed by spokesperson John Marete, the agency said all evidence gathered and analysed so far points to a traffic crash that occurred on December 13, 2025, in the Karai area of Naivasha.
“Based on the evidence gathered and analysed to date, the incident appears to be a road traffic accident, with no indications of foul play,” Amin said.
Multi-Agency Investigation
The probe was conducted by a multi-disciplinary team comprising homicide detectives, experts from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, and forensic specialists from the National Forensic Laboratory, a structure often deployed in high-profile or sensitive cases.
Investigators focused on reconstructing the events before, during and after the crash, examining physical evidence, digital records and eyewitness accounts to establish an accurate timeline.
CCTV and Digital Evidence Analysed
As part of the investigation, detectives retrieved and analysed CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, located near the crash site. The footage was reviewed to track movements linked to the incident and corroborate witness statements.
Additionally, police obtained the bus manifest from the public service vehicle (PSV) involved in the crash, alongside amateur videos recorded at the scene. All digital materials were subjected to forensic analysis to rule out inconsistencies or external interference.
FURTHER UPDATE: INQUIRY INTO THE DEATH OF HON. CYRUS JIRONGO
Drivers, Passengers, and Witnesses Questioned
Police have so far questioned:
- The driver of the bus involved in the crash
- The bus conductor
- Seven passengers who were travelling in the bus at the time
Detectives also recorded a statement from the driver of an alleged rescue bus, identified as Julius Kiprotich Chelule, as part of efforts to account for events immediately after the crash.
Among those questioned was Ann Lanoi Pertet, Jirongo’s wife and the first family member contacted following the incident. Statements were also taken from staff members at Eagol Petrol Station.
Political Leaders Gave Voluntary Statements
The DCI further disclosed that police received voluntary statements from National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, Rebman Malala, and Ibrahim Sambuli.
The three had interacted with Jirongo on December 12, 2025, at Karen Oasis restaurant, hours before the fatal crash.
Investigators emphasised that the statements were part of routine fact-finding to establish Jirongo’s movements and interactions prior to the accident.
File to Be Sent to ODPP
DCI Amin said the investigation is nearing completion and that the case file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further directions.
This may include possible criminal charges against the PSV driver, depending on the final assessment of the evidence.
“The DCI will forward the file to the ODPP upon conclusion of the remaining investigations for further directions, including potential criminal charges against the PSV driver, in line with the evidence available,” Amin said.
Appeal for Restraint and Public Cooperation
As public debate and political commentary continue, the DCI urged leaders and members of the public to avoid speculation.
“The DCI urges politicians to exercise restraint and refrain from making speculative or unsubstantiated statements that could prejudice the investigative process or cause undue public anxiety,” Amin said.
He also called on Kenyans to volunteer any information that could assist detectives as they conclude the remaining stages of the probe.
The DCI extended its deepest condolences to Jirongo’s family, relatives and friends, describing his death as a tragic loss while maintaining that the findings so far point to a traffic accident, not a criminal act.
