“I Will Miss Watching Arsenal With You”: Raila Jnr’s Tribute to His Father Raila

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Fidel Odinga delivered a brief and emotional tribute to his father, the late former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, during the state funeral service at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday.

In his remarks, Fidel remembered his father as a man of loyalty, discipline, and deep passion for football — particularly his support for Arsenal FC and local giants Gor Mahia, where Raila served as patron for many years.

“I will miss watching Arsenal with you,” Fidel said. “You taught me that loyalty, whether to a cause or a club, is about standing firm even in defeat.”

The tribute, delivered before thousands of mourners and dignitaries, offered a rare glimpse into Raila’s family life and personal passions beyond politics. His love for football, long known to the public, became a central part of how many Kenyans related to him — as a man who found joy and community in the game.

Raila’s association with Arsenal was well-documented. He often referenced the club in interviews and speeches, describing it as a lesson in patience and resilience. As Gor Mahia’s patron, he was regularly seen attending matches and supporting the team through its highs and lows, advocating for greater investment in local sports.

During past public appearances, Raila also drew on football analogies to explain political ideas, once comparing Kenya’s leadership to a football team that “must play together to win.” His remarks reflected how sport served as a bridge between his political ideals and his personal interests.

The mention of Arsenal drew cheers and nods from the crowd, a sign of recognition for a man who, even at the highest levels of politics, remained grounded in everyday passions.
