NAIROBI, Kenya – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has scheduled four by-elections for February 26, 2026, setting the stage for fresh political contests in Isiolo, Embu and Kakamega counties.
In a gazette notice, IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon said the polls will cover one parliamentary seat and three ward-level contests left vacant in recent months.
The by-elections include the Isiolo South parliamentary seat, as well as Member of County Assembly (MCA) positions in Muminji and Evurore wards in Mbeere North constituency, Embu County.
Voters in West Kabras ward, Malava constituency, Kakamega County, will also head to the ballot on the same day to elect a new MCA.
Ethekon said the commission has already taken preparatory steps, including the appointment of six returning and deputy returning officers to oversee the exercise.
Two officers have been assigned to each affected county to manage the electoral process.
The IEBC said further details, including timelines for party nominations and voter education activities, will be communicated in line with the electoral calendar.
The February by-elections will be among the first major electoral tests for political parties ahead of the 2027 General Election, with local issues expected to dominate campaigns in the affected areas.
