NAIROBI, Kenya – Inspector General of the National Police Service, Douglas Kanja, has urged Kenyans to exercise caution and responsibility as the country celebrates the New Year 2026, with a special focus on fireworks safety.
In his message, IG Kanja assured the public that comprehensive security measures have been deployed nationwide to safeguard lives and property during the celebrations.
Officers are stationed in towns, residential areas, places of worship, entertainment venues, transport corridors, and other public spaces.
Kanja emphasised that security is a shared responsibility, urging citizens to remain vigilant, cooperate with officers, and report any suspicious activity via emergency lines 999, 911, and 112.
“Those attending social gatherings or entertainment venues are encouraged to be mindful of their surroundings and report any suspicious activities,” he said.
The IG warned against excessive alcohol consumption, which he said contributes to accidents, violence, and preventable deaths.
He called on motorists to avoid drinking and driving, noting that nationwide breathalyser operations will be conducted to deter drunk driving.
Traffic enforcement has also been intensified to prevent reckless driving and road accidents, with Kanja stressing that these measures are meant to save lives, not inconvenience the public.
Regarding fireworks and other celebratory displays, IG Kanja urged citizens to use them responsibly.
Only licensed operators with proper approvals should conduct fireworks, while unregulated use poses risks of fires, injuries, and public panic.
Parents were advised to monitor their children, while business owners and entertainment venue managers were reminded to maintain order, prevent overcrowding, and comply with licensing regulations.
“As we begin the new year, let us choose peace over conflict, responsibility over recklessness, and care for one another over selfishness,” Kanja said.
