NAIROBI, Kenya– Nation Media Group (NMG) has appointed seasoned corporate executive Joseph Muganda as the new Chairman of its Board of Directors, marking the end of Wilfred Kiboro’s long and transformative tenure at the helm of East Africa’s largest media house.
Muganda, who previously served as NMG’s Group CEO between 2015 and 2018, takes over from Kiboro, who is set to retire during the company’s Annual General Meeting on June 27, 2025.
The appointment was confirmed by the NMG Board in a statement issued Thursday.
A familiar face in Kenya’s corporate boardrooms, Muganda brings more than 30 years of experience leading major multinationals across Africa and the UK, including stints as CEO of Vivo Energy Kenya, Kenya Breweries Limited, and British American Tobacco Kenya.
He currently chairs the Board of Stanbic Bank Kenya and serves as a director on several other boards.
“Mr. Muganda is an accomplished business leader whose wide-ranging experience will be invaluable as NMG continues to navigate a rapidly evolving media landscape,” the Board said.
Muganda holds an MBA from the University of Leicester and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Financial Management from the University of Buckingham. He joined the NMG Board in November 2024.
Change in Board Leadership at NMG
Kiboro’s Legacy
Kiboro bows out after nearly three decades at Nation, having steered the company through significant strategic shifts.
He joined NMG in 1993 as Managing Director of the Nation Newspapers Division before rising to Group CEO in 1995, a role he held until 2006. He later became Board Chairman in 2009.
Under his leadership, NMG transitioned from a print-centric operation to a diversified, regional multimedia powerhouse, expanding into broadcasting and launching operations in Uganda and Tanzania.
He is also credited with initiating NMG’s digital transformation, positioning the company for the era of online journalism.
Beyond business strategy, Kiboro has been a staunch defender of press freedom and editorial independence throughout his career.
“His time at NMG has been defined by steadfast commitment to media freedom, journalistic integrity, public interest and organizational accountability,” the Board said.
Kiboro’s efforts to nurture talent and strengthen editorial policy have left a lasting mark on the organisation and the regional media landscape.
The Board, management and staff of NMG expressed gratitude for his “dedicated service and visionary leadership,” wishing him well in retirement.
Muganda assumes leadership at a time of mounting challenges for traditional media, with shifting audiences, economic headwinds and the fast-paced digital revolution.
His return to the Group now comes with a new mandate: to lead the Board in steering East Africa’s leading media company into its next chapter.
