Juja MP George Koimburi Arraigned in Court For Forgery Claims

Date:

KIAMBU, Kenya – Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi was arraigned in court on Wednesday, facing multiple charges related to forging academic certificates dating back to 1994.

Appearing before the Kiambu Law Courts, Koimburi was charged with six counts of forgery and an additional count of failing to appear in court.

The prosecution alleges that the lawmaker falsified a Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) certificate between November and December 1994 to obtain a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Further accusations state that between 2011 and 2012, Koimburi forged two certificates from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT): one for participation in the East African Universities Accession Project and another from the School of Human Resource Development.

In March 2021, he allegedly presented these certificates, along with a forged KCSE certificate, to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Koimburi was arrested outside his residence in Juja on Tuesday morning and taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters for questioning.

His legal team, led by lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, has linked his arrest to recent political remarks.

Koimburi had accused the government of spending Ksh.13 billion to support opposition leader Raila Odinga’s failed bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

The legislator, a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s administration, had stirred political controversy with his claims, questioning government expenditure on the AUC campaign.

His allies now suggest that the charges against him are politically motivated.
