NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) convened a high-level stakeholder engagement forum in Nairobi today to present the newly completed Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Integrated Master Plan and feasibility study, alongside details of the upcoming JKIA modernisation and optimisation project.
The forum brought together key aviation stakeholders to review and discuss the long-term strategic vision for JKIA, which aims to transform Kenya’s main aviation hub into a world-class facility capable of handling significantly higher passenger volumes and improving operational efficiency.
The 20-year master plan (2025–2045) outlines phased infrastructure development, including expansions and modernisation of the existing terminal and construction of new facilities to boost capacity.

According to KAA Managing Director Mohamud Gedi, the modernisation programme will increase JKIA’s annual passenger handling capacity from its current limits to higher thresholds through phased upgrades, addressing congestion and enhancing the travel experience.
“Developed with the global expertise of Dar Al-Handasah, this master plan, together with the JKIA Optimisation Project, provides a clear, resilient, and sustainable roadmap for the airport’s long-term growth, fully aligned with Kenya Vision 2030,” Dr. Gedi said.
Early phases include a new terminal capable of handling millions more passengers annually, while subsequent work will optimise infrastructure to meet future aviation demand.
The master plan also tackles operational improvements and the integration of upgraded airfield capacity to support increased aircraft movements, positioning JKIA competitively among regional aviation hubs.
Stakeholders at the forum were urged to participate actively in the implementation process to ensure that the project reflects broad industry input and supports Kenya’s growth as a key air transport gateway in East Africa.
