NAIROBI, Kenya – Kalonzo Musyoka has been named the new leader of the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya coalition, marking a significant reorganisation of the opposition outfit’s top leadership as it seeks to reposition itself ahead of future political battles.
The leadership overhaul was approved during a joint meeting of Azimio’s governing organs held on Monday, February 2, 2026, with the changes formally communicated to the Registrar of Political Parties shortly after.
According to documents submitted to the registrar, the coalition’s National Executive Council (NEC)—chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta—ratified Kalonzo’s elevation in what insiders describe as a strategic move to provide clearer direction and cohesion within the alliance.
Carol Omondi Replaces Junet Mohamed
The NEC meeting also confirmed Suba North MP Carol Omondi as the new Secretary General, replacing Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, who had held the position since the coalition’s formation.
Paperwork filed with the registrar included minutes of the February 2 meeting, resolutions endorsing the leadership changes, and a completed Statutory Form PP7 outlining the new structure.
A formal letter dated February 2, 2026, addressed to Junet Mohamed, officially notified him of his removal from the secretary general position.
“These changes are part of a deliberate effort to reposition and revitalise the coalition,” Azimio said in a statement after the meeting. “The goal is to foster greater cohesion, effectiveness and unity as the coalition advances its agenda for the nation.”
Registrar Orders Publication of Changes
Registrar of Political Parties and CEO J.C. Lorionokou acknowledged receipt of the coalition’s submission and advised Azimio to publish the leadership changes in line with Section 20 of the Political Parties Act (Cap. 7D), which governs notification and publication requirements.
“This Office acknowledges receipt of your letter dated 2nd February 2026… The political party is advised to publish the change of officials in line with Section 20 of the Political Parties Act,” Lorionokou stated.
Strategic Timing for the Coalition
Kalonzo’s elevation comes at a politically sensitive moment for Azimio. One of its founding partners, the National Liberal Party (NLP), has formally written to the registrar seeking clarity on the coalition’s current legal and operational status.
The leadership changes also follow the resignation of Azimio Executive Director Raphael Tuju, adding to a period of internal transition for the opposition alliance.
