LANGATA, Kenya – A 16-storey building under construction along Muhoho Avenue in South “C” collapsed early this morning, sending debris flying and causing injuries and property damage, authorities have confirmed.
The incident, reported to Akila Police Station at 5:18 a.m., involved debris hitting a taxi vehicle, a Toyota Vitz registered KDM 045P, damaging its windscreen.
One individual, identified as Gideon Kimanthi, was struck by falling debris and rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), together with the Nairobi County Disaster Response Unit, the Kenya Red Cross, and the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) under Dr. Duncan Ochieng (AIG), quickly responded to the scene, approximately 1.5 kilometers from Akila Police Station. Dr. Ochieng is leading the operations on-site.
Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing to determine whether any workers or residents may have been trapped under the rubble.
Authorities have advised residents and passersby to stay clear of the area for their safety.
The KDF’s involvement highlights the critical role of the military in supporting civil disaster response, particularly in complex urban emergencies.
