Kenya Forest Service HQ to Host Expanded Tree Nursery and Barracks

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – In a move to support Kenya’s ambitious tree‑planting goals, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) headquarters is set to host an expanded tree nursery and new barracks for staff, aimed at producing two million tree seedlings annually.

The initiative aligns with the Presidential directive to grow 15 billion trees by 2032, targeting a national tree cover of 30 percent.

The expanded seedbeds will be located within the KFS headquarters grounds, while the National Youth Service (NYS) will partner with KFS to manage the planting and nurturing of the seedlings.

Barracks are being established in KFS staff quarters by the Ministry of Housing to accommodate the NYS team, who will work closely with KFS technical staff and Forest Rangers to raise high-quality tree seedlings.

During a site visit, Chief Conservator of Forests Alex Lemarkoko noted that both indigenous and exotic tree seedlings, along with fruit trees, will be cultivated simultaneously to meet the growing demand.

The model nursery is expected to supply Nairobi and the surrounding areas, with a focus on urban tree planting and creating greener cities.

This development is part of broader efforts to enhance sustainable forestry, environmental conservation, and urban greening initiatives in Kenya.
