NAIROBI, Kenya – The Ministry of Education has announced that the long-awaited Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS) will officially go live on January 9, 2026, marking a key milestone in the government’s efforts to modernize education data management and improve service delivery.
Speaking on a local television station on Thursday, Principal Secretary Julius Bitok highlighted the limitations of the current National Education Management Information System (NEMIS), describing it as “rigid, limited in scope, and not easily integrable with other government systems.”
“These challenges informed our decision to upgrade to a more intelligent and agile platform,” said PS Bitok.
KEMIS is designed as a comprehensive digital platform covering all levels of education, from basic education to higher education and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
It will also integrate key agencies including the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Under the new system, authorities will be able to track a learner’s full educational journey with ease.
“A single click on KEMIS will allow verification of where an individual attended primary school, secondary school, college, and university,” Bitok explained.
He added that the system will enhance transparency, accountability, and planning in the education sector.
Backend preparations are currently underway in collaboration with the Ministry of ICT, Konza Technopolis, and other stakeholders to ensure the platform is robust and fully integrated before the launch.
The system will also support accurate data on learner numbers and smooth transitions under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), a move PS Bitok says will streamline monitoring across the sector.
“I want to be remembered for streamlining systems and data in the education sector,” he said, emphasising the role of decisive leadership and integrated digital systems in modernizing education in Kenya.
