NAIROBI, Kenya- The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued an alert warning of heavy rainfall expected across several parts of the country between 27 and 30 December 2025, with the potential for localized flooding in vulnerable areas.
In a forecast update released on Friday, the department said parts of the South-eastern lowlands are expected to receive heavy rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres within 24 hours on 27 December.
The situation is forecast to intensify on 28 and 29 December, with rainfall amounts likely to exceed 30 millimetres in 24 hours and spread to a wider area. According to KMD, the regions expected to be affected include:
- The Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi
- The Highlands West of the Rift Valley
- The Lake Victoria Basin
- Southern parts of the Coastal region
“The rainfall is expected to intensify and become more widespread on 28th and 29th December before reducing in intensity on 30th December,” the department said.

The weatherman has cautioned residents living in flood-prone and low-lying areas to remain alert, warning that localized flooding may occur where heavy rains persist for extended periods.
Motorists have also been advised to exercise caution, particularly in areas prone to poor drainage, while communities near rivers and informal settlements have been urged to take precautionary measures.
The department said it will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary.
Counties to be on the lookout include Migori, Homa Bay, Kisii, Narok, Kajiado, Makueni, Machakos, Nairobi, Kericho, Bomet, the southern parts of Kitui, Taita Taveta, and Kwale.
