Kenya Reopens Schools on January 5 as Government Releases Sh44.2bn in Capitation

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 4 — After the long festive break, Kenyan learners are set to return to classrooms on Monday, January 5, 2026, as schools across the country resume the first term of the new academic year.

The Ministry of Education has released the official 2026 academic calendar, confirming that pre-primary, primary, junior and senior secondary schools will kick off the year with a 13-week first term ending on April 2.

Massive funding boost to ensure a smooth start

In a strategic move to support learning activities and alleviate the burden on parents and school administrators, the government has disbursed Sh44.245 billion in capitation funds ahead of the school reopening.

According to Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba, the funds are allocated as follows:

  • Sh3.7 billion for Free Primary Education
  • Sh14.46 billion for Free Day Junior Secondary Education
  • Sh26.08 billion for Free Day Secondary Education

The early release of these funds is intended to ensure that schools have sufficient resources to meet their operational needs without imposing additional levies on parents at the beginning of the term.

Grade 10 placement and student movement

Under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) transition, learners entering Grade 10 will report to their senior schools starting January 12, following the first placement revision completed on December 29, 2025.

Parents and guardians still seeking review of Grade 10 placements can apply between January 6 and January 9, 2026, through the ministry’s placement portal or via institutions.

Parents brace for back-to-school costs

With just days to reopening, Kenyan parents are already engaging in the annual back-to-school rush, purchasing uniforms, books, and supplies amid widespread concerns over tightening household budgets.

Parent leaders have urged schools to exercise flexibility on fee-related policies as learners return after the holiday break.

Looking ahead: Academic rhythm and breaks

According to the full academic calendar, after the first term ends on April 2, learners will enjoy a three-week April holiday before the second term begins on April 27.

The second term is scheduled to run for 14 weeks before the next holiday, with the third term culminating on October 23, 2026.
