NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenyan National Assembly has paid tribute to the late Pope Francis, with Speaker Moses Wetang’ula leading MPs in a solemn moment of silence following his passing on Easter Monday, April 20, 2025.
In a formal address to the House, Wetang’ula invoked Standing Order 259(d) (1), which mandates the House to observe moments of silence in respect of significant national or global figures.
The Speaker, a devout Catholic, described Pope Francis as “a moral compass of our time,” whose legacy of humility, justice, and service transcended borders and religions.
“We join the global community in mourning a shepherd of extraordinary humility, compassion, and conviction,” Wetang’ula stated. “Pope Francis lived the Gospel, often reminding us that the Church is like a field hospital, healing wounds, warming hearts, and building bridges.”
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was the son of Italian immigrants.
A chemist by training, he later joined the Society of Jesus, eventually becoming the first Jesuit Pope in 2013.
His papacy was marked by a tireless focus on social justice, interfaith dialogue, and environmental stewardship.
His call for peace, compassion, and care for the vulnerable resonated globally, especially in Kenya, where his influence strengthened interfaith relations and supported charitable endeavors.

Wetang’ula also acknowledged Pope Francis’ profound impact in Kenya, particularly his efforts to promote servant leadership, which resonated deeply with the Kenyan people.
“He was a beacon of spiritual wisdom and modern moral clarity,” the Speaker said.
In closing, Wetang’ula informed the House of his intention to sign the official Condolence Book at the Apostolic Nuncio’s residence and extended an invitation to Catholic MPs and spiritual leaders to join him.
He concluded the tribute by invoking the Pope’s enduring legacy: “May the soul of Pope Francis rest in eternal peace.”
The House then observed a moment of silence in memory of the late pontiff, whose death on Easter Monday marked a poignant moment in the Christian calendar.
