HOMA BAY, Kenya – The 2025 Madaraka Day celebrations will be held at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay Town, with the government ramping up preparations, including major infrastructure upgrades.
The national event, themed “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs,” will see a facelift of key facilities in the region.
Authorities have announced plans to rehabilitate and expand Raila Odinga Stadium to accommodate 12,000 people, with contractors already on-site.
Additionally, upgrades to Kabunde Airstrip and key road networks are in the pipeline to support the anticipated influx of visitors.
A high-level government delegation, led by the Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration, held discussions with local leaders, including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma.
Also in attendance were the Principal Secretaries for Roads and Transport, among other senior officials, signaling a coordinated effort to ensure the event’s success.
Madaraka Day, marked annually on June 1st, commemorates Kenya’s attainment of self-rule in 1963. This will be the first time Homa Bay hosts the national celebrations, a move expected to boost the region’s economic prospects and highlight its maritime potential.
