NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship has ignited fresh debate about his next political move, with some urging him to reconnect with Kenya’s disillusioned youth.
Raila, who lost to Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf in the closely contested election in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, expressed gratitude for the backing he received from President William Ruto and the Kenyan government.
He acknowledged that Ruto’s administration provided substantial logistical support, allowing him to campaign across the continent and meet key leaders.
“President William Ruto did everything possible to make my campaign a success,” Raila said. “He gave me all the logistical support that enabled me to travel the length and breadth of the continent and made appointments for me to meet leaders across Africa.”
He insisted that his defeat was not due to a lack of effort in the campaign, hinting at undisclosed factors that influenced the outcome.
“We were sure we were going to win, but other factors came into play, and they are going to come out soon,” he stated.
With his AU ambitions thwarted, attention is shifting to Raila’s political future, particularly his role in Kenya’s opposition.
Some political observers believe that if he intends to remain influential, he must urgently rebuild bridges—especially with Gen Z, a demographic that has become increasingly vocal in demanding accountability from leaders.
Former Chair of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Macharia Njeru cautioned Raila that his legacy risks being “dead and buried forever” if he does not realign with the younger generation.
“Hon. Raila’s singular focus from now on should be to make peace with the Gen Zs, otherwise whatever is left of his legacy will be dead and buried forever,” Njeru wrote. “Ignore the sycophants.”

Raila, who has long been a dominant force in Kenyan politics, now faces a crucial decision: whether to return to opposition leadership with renewed vigor or take a step back after yet another high-stakes political setback.
