Webuye–Kitale Road Crash Leaves 15 Dead, 18 Injured

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — A tragic road accident in Malaha, near Lugulu town, claimed 15 lives and left 18 others seriously injured on Monday evening, authorities have confirmed.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the incident began when two motorcycles traveling in opposite directions collided, killing both riders instantly.

As members of the public gathered to assist, a trailer traveling from Kitale towards Webuye lost control and struck those at the scene, compounding the death toll.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the trailer rammed into members of the public who had gathered to help with rescue efforts,” NTSA said in a statement.

“Fifteen people have been confirmed dead, eighteen sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at Webuye District Hospital, while three have been treated and discharged.”

The Authority dispatched response teams to manage the scene and launched investigations into the cause of the crash. NTSA urged road users to adhere strictly to traffic rules, exercise caution, and reduce speed, particularly in densely populated areas.

Road safety advocates warned that such accidents highlight persistent dangers on Kenya’s highways.

According to official statistics, Kenya recorded over 3,000 road fatalities in 2025, with motorcycles accounting for a significant proportion of the deaths.

“This incident underscores the need for vigilance not just by drivers but also by bystanders assisting at crash sites,” said a road safety expert.
