NAIROBI, Kenya- At least 18 suspects have been arrested in Malindi town following a targeted police operation aimed at dismantling criminal gangs that have been terrorising residents and disrupting public safety.
The crackdown, conducted by law enforcement officers in Muyeye and Milano areas, led to the recovery of stolen mobile phones, a television set, and crude weapons believed to have been used in a series of violent crimes.
In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the operation followed intelligence-led surveillance targeting organised criminal groups responsible for robberies and intimidation of residents.
“The suspects were arrested during a coordinated operation, and several exhibits linked to criminal activities were recovered. Investigations are ongoing as officers pursue additional leads,” the DCI said.
Police believe the recovered items were stolen from residents during recent criminal incidents reported in the area.
The suspects are currently being held in custody as detectives process their files ahead of arraignment in court.

Festive Season Security Boost
The arrests come as the National Police Service (NPS) intensifies security operations across the country during the festive season.
In a separate statement, the NPS reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring Kenyans that law enforcement officers are on high alert to ensure peaceful celebrations.
“We remain committed to protecting the public and maintaining law and order. We urge members of the public to cooperate with the police and report any suspicious activity,” the statement read.
Residents of Malindi have welcomed the operation, saying criminal gangs had instilled fear, particularly at night and during peak holiday activity.
Authorities warned that similar operations will continue in other identified hotspots as part of a broader strategy to dismantle criminal networks and restore public confidence in security.
