Moses Kuria Says Broad‑Based Government Could See ‘Casualties’, Hints Kindiki May Be Dropped

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Chama Cha Kazi party leader Moses Kuria has warned that Kenya’s broad‑based government may experience political upheaval ahead of the 2027 General Election, with potential “casualties” including Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki.

The former Cabinet Secretary made the remarks in a televised interview on Sunday on KTN News.

Kindiki is a beneficiary of an impeachment against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Kuria, a former senior advisor to President William Ruto, said the broad‑based government, a coalition arrangement between the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), faces internal tension that may lead to shifts in political alliances and leadership roles.

“It’s gonna be noisy, messy. But there will be casualties,” Kuria said, describing politics as akin to investment where leaders choose partnerships based on potential return.

In his remarks, Kuria suggested that President Ruto might reconsider Kindiki’s role as running mate in 2027, especially as the government looks to expand its support base.

Kuria pointed to political calculations that could favor a candidate from Luo Nyanza, such as Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who is seen as a strategic pick to consolidate votes in that region.

“Ruto will be looking to go with a more viable option… He will invest where he is likely to get a return on investment,” Kuria said, implying that political survival in the broad‑based government depends on electoral advantage.

The concept of a broad‑based government was championed by President Ruto as a way to foster national unity and inclusive growth, bringing together different political parties and ethnic blocs into government.

In April, Ruto said no community or region would be sidelined under this arrangement, emphasising its potential to unlock Kenya’s social and economic development.

However, Kuria’s comments highlight the challenges within the coalition, particularly the balancing of competing interests as the country heads toward the 2027 polls.

His remarks reflect ongoing political manoeuvring and jockeying for position within both the Kenya Kwanza government and allied parties.

Kuria also highlighted the influence of Gachagua and internal divisions within the ruling coalition as factors shaping the political landscape.

He noted the fluid nature of alliances and the need for leaders to adapt to emerging political realities.

As the 2027 election year approaches, Kenya’s political environment is expected to intensify, with key figures positioning themselves and their allies for advantage.
