“His Death Hit Me Like a Thunderbolt”: Wetangula Eulogizes Cyrus Jirongo

Date:

LUGARI, Kenya — Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula delivered an emotional tribute at the burial of former MP Cyrus Jirongo, describing him as a dear friend and a unifying figure for the Luhya community.

“Jirongo was personal to me as a friend. His death hit me like a thunderbolt,” Wetangula, who is also the National Assembly speaker, said, speaking to mourners gathered in Lugari.

Wetangula described Jirongo as a man of generosity who valued friendships and made time for everyone around him.

“He was a man who respected friends. He had time for all his friends. We have lost our hero,” Wetangula said.

The Ford Kenya leader also highlighted Jirongo’s commitment to fostering unity among the Luhya community.

“He wanted us to unite. He acted positively and actively to ensure the Luhya community unites. If there is a lesson to learn from today, it is the need for us to unite and resist the temptations to be divided,” he said.

Wetangula further noted Jirongo’s humility and openness regarding his financial status.

“Jirongo was not shy. He would say when he didn’t have money,” he said.

In a show of solidarity with Jirongo’s family, Wetangula revealed that President William Ruto had been contacted and expressed his intention to meet the family after the burial at State House.

“As we bury my friend, I want to tell the family that we have talked to President William Ruto. He said once we are done with the burial, he will be taken to the State House,” Wetangula said.

The Ford Kenya leader concluded by echoing the growing calls for transparency surrounding Jirongo’s death, urging authorities to provide answers.

“I stand here like everybody, as a leader in this country and region, to join those who are asking questions. There must be answers,” Wetangula said.

Jirongo, known for his generosity and efforts to unite the Luhya community, was remembered by friends and political allies as a leader who prioritized people and community cohesion.

His death has sparked both mourning and calls for accountability.
