MPs Demand Urgent Reforms at Kenya Airways Over Poor Service and Mismanagement

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Lawmakers have launched a scathing attack on Kenya Airways (KQ), accusing the national carrier of eroding its once-stellar reputation through poor service, declining professionalism, and disregard for customer welfare.

During a heated debate in the National Assembly on Wednesday, MPs across the political divide described the airline—once celebrated as “The Pride of Africa”—as a shadow of its former self.

The discussion was triggered by a statement sought by MP Adan Keynan, who questioned the current status of the airline.

He lamented that despite receiving consistent government support, KQ has “rewarded taxpayers with arrogance, inefficiency, and a total collapse in service standards.”

“It’s painful when citizens who once took pride in our flag carrier now avoid it out of fear of being stranded,” said Keynan.

Members of Parliament recounted a range of grievances, from long flight delays, cancelled connections, and lost luggage to rude staff and unkempt cabins.

Many questioned why KQ continues to charge premium fares while delivering what they described as “budget airline experiences.”

“Today, you pay the same as on Emirates or Ethiopian Airlines but get the service of a low-cost carrier,” one MP remarked. “It’s unacceptable for a national airline to treat passengers like an inconvenience.”

The House also raised concern over alleged “cartel influence” in leasing and management decisions, warning that vested interests may be undermining efficiency and accountability within the airline.

“The planes are leased through shadowy arrangements controlled by middlemen,” one legislator charged. “Until we clean up management, KQ will keep embarrassing this country.”

In his remarks, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula commended Members for their candid submissions, emphasizing that the airline’s image reflects Kenya’s global reputation.

“When our flag carrier fails to meet standards of decency, courtesy, and reliability, it dents our national image,” said Wetang’ula. “Public entities bearing our flag must uphold the highest standards of service.”

The House resolved to form a select committee to investigate Kenya Airways’ management systems, customer care practices, and adherence to international aviation standards.

The committee will recommend measures to restore professionalism, reliability, and pride in the national carrier.

Kenya Airways, once a continental aviation success story, now faces mounting scrutiny from Parliament—and growing impatience from the traveling public.

“We must decide whether KQ remains The Pride of Africa or becomes the shame of Africa,” one MP concluded. “Kenyans deserve better.”
