MURANG’A, Kenya – A family in Kigumo constituency is grieving after a young mother allegedly killed her two-year-old daughter before taking her own life on the eve of the New Year.
Jane Nyambura, 25, reportedly committed the shocking act at her rental home, leaving the community in disbelief.
Her mother, Esther Njeri, described her daughter as “very jovial, always happy and social.”
According to Njeri, she had left Nyambura’s second-born daughter, Tianna Kabutha, at home with her granddaughter in the morning before heading to Kangari market for her daily trading.
It was only around 6:30 pm that a neighbour called her, urging her to return home immediately.
“I was shocked by what I found,” Njeri said tearfully. “My daughter’s body was hanging from the ceiling, and the child had stab wounds.”
Njeri said nothing in Nyambura’s life indicated she was struggling. Nyambura’s younger brother, a Grade Nine student, had witnessed her handling a rope earlier in the day but was unaware of her intentions.
A family friend, Catherine Wanjiru, noted that Nyambura had graduated with a finance degree in 2024 but had been unemployed since, having previously worked at a mattress shop in Kasarani.
Wanjiru appealed for assistance from local leaders and the county government, highlighting that the family is struggling to fund the burial of both victims.
John Njoroge, Nyambura’s cousin, urged young people to seek help when facing personal difficulties.
“If someone comes to you seeking help, don’t dismiss them. You may just save their lives,” he said.
The tragic incident has raised concerns over youth mental health and unemployment, with calls for more support systems and community awareness.
