NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has dismissed criticism surrounding his decision to join the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), telling detractors to stop sending him unsolicited advice over his political choices.
In a strongly worded statement shared on X, Havi said he would no longer entertain messages questioning his move to the Rigathi Gachagua-led party.
“Please, do not spam my WhatsApp DM with advice or dissatisfaction with my choice to join DCP,” Havi said.
He questioned the sudden surge of criticism, noting that it came months after he resigned from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
“Where have you been for the last four months since I resigned from UDA, to advise on what I should have done or not done?” he posed.
Please, do not spam my WhatsApp dm with advice or dissatisfaction with my choice to join DCP. Where have you been for the last 4 months since I resigned from UDA, to advise on what I should have done or not done? Weka picha yako na jina lako kwa ballot if you think you are more
Havi challenged those offering unsolicited opinions to test their own political standing at the ballot box, suggesting that public commentary without accountability carried little weight.
“Weka picha yako na jina lako kwa ballot if you think you are more knowledgeable on the matter,” he added.
The remarks highlight the tensions that often accompany party realignments, with Havi making it clear that his decision to join DCP is final and not open to public negotiation.
On Wednesday, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua officially welcomed Havi into the party, describing him as a seasoned legal expert whose experience would strengthen DCP’s legislative and oversight agenda.
Gachagua said the party was deliberately recruiting professionals with deep expertise in law, economics and public policy to bolster its capacity in Parliament and other leadership spaces.
“I am happy to welcome Nelson Havi SC, one of the country’s legal experts, to walk with us as he pursues representation of the people of Westlands constituency in the National Assembly,” Gachagua said.
DCP party requires great legal minds for Legislation, Representation and Oversight.I am happy to welcome @NelsonHavi, one of the greatest legal minds in the country to walk with us in his quest to represent the people of Westlands constituency in the National Assembly.
Havi has openly expressed interest in contesting the Westlands parliamentary seat, which he unsuccessfully vied for in the 2022 general election under the UDA ticket, losing to incumbent MP Tim Wanyonyi.
Gachagua described DCP as a political home for professionals seeking to translate expertise into public leadership.
“DCP is the home of progressive professionals who desire political leadership,” he said.
Havi’s political realignment follows months of outspoken criticism of government policies, particularly on governance, constitutionalism and the rule of law.
Framing Havi’s entry as part of a broader strategy, Gachagua said the party was keen to attract leaders with practical oversight skills rather than rhetoric.
“The country needs leaders who understand the law, governance and accountability. Oversight is not a slogan; it is a skill. That is why leaders like Havi are critical to our journey,” he said.
