NAIROBI, Kenya – Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has pledged to carry forward the political legacy of his late brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, as he officially assumes leadership of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Speaking during Raila’s State Funeral at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday, Oburu expressed gratitude to party members for entrusting him with the mantle, vowing to honour the ideals that defined Raila’s long political career.
“I want to thank my party, ODM, for making me the party leader,” Oburu said. “Even though Raila’s shoes are too big to fill, I will do my best. I will not disappoint.”
Senator Oburu Odinga: I want to thank my party ODM, for making me the acting party leader of ODM, the largest party on East and Central Africa.
The veteran politician, who has long served alongside his brother in opposition politics, said he would steer the party with “vigour and unity” as it embarks on a transition period following Raila’s passing.
“ODM is the oldest and largest political party in East and Central Africa,” he noted. “I will take that mantle with energy and commitment to ensure the movement continues to thrive.”
Oburu’s appointment as acting party leader was confirmed Thursday morning following a unanimous decision by ODM’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
In a statement posted on the party’s official platforms, ODM announced:
“The National Executive Committee has unanimously endorsed the designation of Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga as Acting Party Leader. This appointment takes effect immediately.”
The move marks the first major step in ODM’s internal reorganisation since Raila’s death on Wednesday.
Party officials say Oburu’s appointment is meant to ensure leadership continuity as ODM charts its path forward in Kenya’s changing political landscape.
For nearly two decades, ODM has remained one of the country’s most influential political movements, shaping opposition politics and driving calls for democratic reform.
