NAIROBI, Kenya — Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa has accused the National Police Service (NPS) of avoiding accountability after Inspector General Douglas Kanja failed to attend a scheduled meeting to update opposition leaders on the investigation into the ACK Witima Church attack.
The meeting on Wednesday, February 16, was attended by the United Opposition principals, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who sought clarity on the violent incident that occurred on January 25, 2026.
During the attack, tear gas canisters were thrown into the ACK church compound in Othaya, Nyeri County, attended by Gachagua, causing panic among worshippers.
Wazalendo wenzangu,A few weeks ago, we issued a clear and firm demand to the Inspector General of Police: a full report on the violent attack at ACK Giitima Church, and the arrest of those responsible. This was not a request. It was a constitutional obligation we called upon
Police confirmed the attack is under investigation, but no arrests have been publicly announced.
On Sunday, the police spokesperson asked witnesses and those affected by the attack to record a statement with authorities.
Senator Karungo said that the church attack involved “state-hired police officers” and said the IG’s absence was a deliberate attempt to avoid accountability.
“His absence signals that the Ruto regime is not willing to end human rights violations against its own people,” he said.
The opposition leaders are expected to seek the police boss’s audience on Friday, February 20, 2026, accompanied by citizens and supporters, to demand answers.
The incident has drawn national attention and condemnation from church and opposition leaders, highlighting rising concerns over security, accountability, and the use of force in public spaces.
