NAIROBI, Kenya — Police have intensified the crackdown on illegal drugs, recovering large quantities of suspected narcotics in separate operations in Machakos and Mombasa counties, authorities said.
In Machakos County, officers on routine patrol recovered suspected drugs after a man abandoned a bag and fled on spotting police at Ekalakala Market on January 23.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Ekalakala Police Station had identified the individual as suspicious while he was carrying a large bag.
“Upon spotting the officers, the suspect abandoned the bag and fled, evading arrest,” the NPS said in a statement.
A search of the bag uncovered a substantial haul of suspected narcotics, including 49 brooms and seven kilogrammes of suspected cannabis.
Police also recovered 25 packets of rolling papers, commonly associated with drug packaging and consumption.
Investigations have since been launched to trace the suspect and dismantle any networks linked to the recovered drugs.

The NPS reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order, saying officers will continue with sustained patrols, intelligence-led operations and rapid responses to threats to public safety.
Meanwhile, in a separate operation in Mombasa County, detectives arrested two suspected drug peddlers following a coordinated raid in Utange, Kisauni Sub-county.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspects were arrested at a residential house in Barawa area that was enclosed by a large perimeter wall, raising suspicion.
Officers drawn from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU), the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) and Kiembeni Police Station carried out the raid, bringing what investigators described as a well-organised drug operation to a halt.
During a thorough search of the house, detectives recovered several sachets of heroin hidden inside two bedrooms.
Further searches led to the discovery of another package of heroin buried in a hole within the compound.
By the end of the operation, officers had seized 1,346 grammes of heroin valued at approximately Sh4.09 million, along with a digital weighing scale and a drying machine.
The two suspects are currently in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court as investigations continue.
