Prof. Amukowa Anangwe Cleared as DPP Withdraws Sh32.4M Corruption Charges

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has formally withdrawn a KSh32.4 million corruption case against former University of Nairobi Council Chairperson Prof. Amukowa Anangwe and three other senior officials.

Appearing before Anti-Corruption Principal Magistrate Celesa Okore on Monday, the DPP applied to terminate the case under Section 87(a) of the Criminal Procedure Code, effectively ending the legal proceedings.

The case also involved Caren Omwenga, Abdullahi Ahmed, and Daniel Brian Ouma, who had all been charged alongside Prof. Anangwe in May 2025 with abuse of office and unlawful acquisition of public property.

“We seek to have the case against Prof. Anangwe and his co-accused persons withdrawn,” a State prosecutor told the court.

Following the withdrawal, Prof. Anangwe’s legal team requested the immediate release of his passport and a refund of the Sh1 million cash bail he deposited after his arrest.

“With the withdrawal of charges, we urge the court to release the passport and direct that the cash bail be refunded without delay,” his lawyer said.

Magistrate Okore granted the request and ordered the refund of bail for all the accused.

The four had long maintained that the charges were politically motivated and in violation of earlier court orders.

Their arrest and prosecution sparked controversy, with some observers linking the case to power struggles within the University of Nairobi’s governance structure.

The withdrawal of charges now clears Prof. Anangwe and the others of any criminal wrongdoing in connection with the alleged loss of funds at the university.
